People always give crap to Pershing Square in DTLA, deeming it an architectural eyesore.  According to Los Angeles Times critic Christopher Hawthorne called it "a perfectly depressing symbol of L.A.'s neglected public realm."L.A. Weekly's Tibby Rothman dubbed Pershing Square "one of the most unpopular and unusable spaces in the city."

That's so harsh LA. Just like with all things that can have a bit of "ugly" there's beautiful spots to be found within. I love the big city landscape in the background, mixed in with succulent plants and pink flowers in the background. It's much like LA in where it is just a hodgepodge of a little bit of everything: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

In the 20's it was way more lush. Lots of trees and grass much like a mini little Central Park. Jump over to 1992 with a $14.5 million face lift, and the park got a very Art Deco-y transformation full of concrete and colorful walls. It's been called less inviting, and confusing to get to with all the underground parking garage built into it. Bums and seedy business use to typically take place there. You can still find a lot of that still happening at night, but during the day there's plenty of security walking around to make sure the grounds are kept clean and vagrant-free as much as possible. With that being said Pershing Square is currently underway in its other new $2 million dollar renovations. Mayor Huizar says the park will be more 'inviting.'

I say let's keep some of the weird quirkiness and oddities that make Pershing SquarePershing Square.  Yes it needs a little face-lift a la LA style, but hopefully we can keep the parts that make it just as authentically iconic, ugly bits and all.
